Delegated Papal Jurisdiction in Arpadian Hungary

In this book a specific aspect of the Kingdom of Hungary in the Arpadian age and of Hungarian ecclesiastical history is explored, the emergence and operation of the system of delegated papal jurisdiction and its interaction with local conditions from the beginnings in the late twelfth century until the end of the Arpadian age. Due to the reforms of the medieval papacy, which began in the late eleventh century, the popes acquired several new practical and conceptual tools that could be used both to restructure or reshape the Church and its various regions and to receive feedback from the local churches. Perhaps the best example of the latter (sending feedback tied to representation) is the work of the papal judges-delegate. The system of papal delegated jurisdiction on one hand sup ported the claims of the Apostolic See for the primacy in the Church, on the other hand the litigants played a role in shaping the legal frames and the practice of papal delegations as well. The author offers in his book an insight into the general tendencies of the system, meanwhile the Hungarian situation and the individual cases are analysed in detail as well. Gábor Barabás is an Associate Professor of the Institute of History at the University of Pécs (Hungary). His main fields of interest are several aspects of medieval Church history. A kötet az Árpád-kori Magyar Királyság, illetve a magyar egyháztörténet egy sajátos aspektusát, a pápai küldöttbíróság magyarországi megjelenését, működését és a lokális viszonyokra gyakorolt hatását, valamint utóbbiaknak a rendszer alakulásában játszott szerepét elemzi a 12. századi kezdetektől az Árpád-kor végéig. A középkori pápaság 11. századtól kezdődő reformidőszakában az egyházfők több olyan új eszközre tettek szert, amelyek segítségével igyekeztek alakítani az Egyház alapvető szerkezetét, formálni annak különböző régiót, és amelyek révén adott esetben ezen területek is visszahathattak a centrumra. Utóbbi aspektusra talán a pápai delegált bíróság kínálja a legjobb példát, amely egyrészt az Apostoli Szék növekvő univerzális hatalmához, illetve primátusi igényeihez kapcsolódott, de a pereskedő felek is nagy szerepet játszottak az egyes esetek, illetve magának a rendszer egészének alakításában. A szerző könyvében bemutatja a pápai delegált bíróság általánosnak tekinthető működését, illetve részleteiben elemzi a magyarországi eseteket, valamint az ezek alapján vázolja fel a szentszéki küldöttbíróság működésének magyarországi jellemzőit.
